Haló! It’s been a minute!
Sula dtosaím ba mhaith liom GRMA mór a rá libh atá cláraithe agus a labhraíonn liom faoi na nuachtlitreacha seo - bhí uaim comhráite a thosú faoi rudaí as a mbainim sult, agus tuairimí daoine eile a chloisteáil. It makes my day aon uair a mbíonn comhrá agam libh faoin stuff seo, is mór agam bhur bhfreagraí agus moltaí, mo cheol sibh 💞 Also: hi Áine! xx
We’re having trouble with Substack links, and still no text allignment for bilingual newsletters, booo.. so if your next installment comes from a different e-mail provider, be sure to mark it as safe to go straight to your inbox :)
Italics = Béarla,
Gach rud eile = Gaeilge - agus fáilte!
Luaim Maggie Roggers go minic. I think it’s fair: she’s really f*cking cool. I ndiaidh Heard it in a Past Life (agus ainmniúchán Grammy), d’fhill sí ar an ollscoil le tráchtas a scríobh dar teideal “Surrender: Cultural Consciousness, the Spirituality of Public Gatherings, & the Ethics of Power in Pop Culture” faoin gceol, féilte agus teacht le chéile.
“I was thinking about this world in which people are moving further and further away from traditional religion, but yet are seeking to be connected to both something bigger than oneself and to each other,” a dúirt sí.
Táim ag cuimhniú air seo agus muid ag dul i dtreo an tsamhraidh agus filleadh na bhféilte - tá ceol agus ceiliúradh comhroinnte ag déanamh maitheasa dúinn, dár sláinte, dár meabharshláinte, dár meon! (Tuilleadh san alt seo - Why is live music so good for our well-being?)
Anuas air sin, le fás Electric Picnic, tá cineál counter-movement ann, agus féilte beaga ag tíocht chun cinn. Tá Body & Soul laghdaithe i mbliana, le heispéireas níos fearr a chruthú dá lucht freastail. Scríobhfaidh mé litir iomlán mar gheall ar fhéilte, ach cúpla ceann ar fiú breathnú orthu ná Otherside (ag a mbeidh ardán ag The Cobblestone!), Beyond the Pale (over 21’s!), agus Another Love Story.
ÉIST: Labhair mé ar Bladhaire ar RTÉ inné mar gheall air seo ar fad, albam Harry Styles, Bruce Springsteen, agus cuid den stuif eile sa nuachtlitir. Más fearr leat a bheith ag éisteacht ná ag léamh, tá nasc anseo: rte.ie/radio/rnag/clips/22102793/

Netflix: Heartstopper 💓
Thaitin Heartstopper chomh mór sin liom gur scríobh mé póstáil iomlán faoi ar Substack anseo, agus tá leagan níos giorra den léirmheas ar Tuairisc.ie an tseachtain seo - míle buíochas le Meadhbh as an gcuireadh chun scríbhneoireachta! Is sraith álainn croíúil atá inti bunaithe ar greannáin Alice Oseman, atá ag cur thar maoill le háthas aiteach, carachtair áille, agus léargas daonna ar shaol na n-óg. Be ready to ugly cry - in a good way.
*side note, this is such a gorgeous show for LGBTQ youth but having it on the same platform as Ricky Gervais would be grim af, *cough* Netflix.. Hugh Carr hits the nail here on Joe.ie.
Scannán: An Cailín Ciúin
I’ll be honest: I did not want to see this film. I thought it would be another sad story about how we’ve let down women and children in this country - like Philomena and many others - and with discourse around the Maternity Hospital and women’s rights still ongoing.. I’m just a bit tired of it all?
Ironically, being won over is central to this gorgeous film, as I truly was. Beautifully shot and thoughtfully directed, the story is simple but characters are complicated and lovable. Set across a summer in Ireland, a cuckoo sings during the opening credits: cuckoos lay their eggs in the nests of other birds and leave them to raise their young instead of doing it themselves, mirroring the film’s plot - the attention to detail!! Also a huge moment for the Kimberley biscuit. 100% worth a watch.
In cinemas for another week or so, we went to IFI Dublin.
Scannán: Everything Everywhere All At Once
Ní chreidim nach bhfuil níos mó cainte air seo? Léirithe ag the Daniels, is scannán aicsin é, a bhfuil croí mór maith ina lár.
All I knew in advance of seeing this film was that it was “a story about an Asian-American woman and her strained relationship with her daughter.” Not wrong, but also a million miles from the glittering, hilarious, bizarre, multiverse, sci-fi comedy the film actually is. Villains in camp outfits, unlikely heroes, and the most romantic line ever [spoiler]. Michelle Yeoh is class.
In a world full of Marvel cookie-cutter films, be an EEAAO fan. Still showing at The Lighthouse Dublin. Buíochas speisialta le Raidió na Life as an pas preasa!
