Ceann sciobtha, pacáilte go barra le ceol nua. Aoine shona daoibh, and big welcome to new subscribers! 💜
Tá gach amhrán luaite, agus cúpla ceann nua eile (Chlöe’s Body Do ina measc!) ar an seinnliosta seo:
Bainfidmid an ceann de le Hozier - Eat Your Young (EP). A triad, including title track Eat Your Young, definitely the radio track, although muffles his lyrics a bit (pity when poetry is his strong suit), and ending with Through Me (The Flood), a slightly more difficult listen with unpredictable melodies and rhythms that might be a truer reflection of Hozier as a musician. I called it groovy and existential on Instagram and I stand by that.
He plays Malahide, INEC and Academy this year (would love an Academy ticket if you see one going). In other Hozier news, Take Me To Chruch passed 2b streams and it still sounds as good as it did in 2013:
GAFA with Rosalia’s engagement announcement in form of new BESO video🥲🥹
David Keenan is churning out tunes at an unprecedented rate. Dare I say he is too productive? I’ve barely processed an album or EP by the time another has spilled from his pen - or maybe a feather quill - and it’s not that they’re not good, I just can’t keep up. Then again, I’ve never finished a song so power to him. I am enjoying this new offering, but feel like when there are so many layers and references to each song, a little breathing space for them would be beneficial. Crude Boyo (EP) is live on Bandcamp now.
Cosúil le hamhráin Keenan, ceapaim gur gá suí leis an gcineál seo ceoil ar feadh scaithimh, le ligean dhó dul i bhfeidhm ort. Cnuasach é seo a thógann ar fhuaim shainiúil Lankum, ach atá níos boige in áiteacha agus níor gairbhe in áiteacha eile. It’s atmospheric and layered, and sort of carries you off in a magical way (although Master Crowley’s felt to me like being in an old tavern on the coast of a sprawling fantasy landscape that sort of reminded me of LOTR caricature, but probably because I don’t have a wide a frame of reference for fantasyscapes.. probably a me problem). That said, Live Long Day seemed to be an acquired taste: people loved it’s dischordant darkness, or found it abrasive. False Lankum seems a little more polished, and might be a gentler entry point if you’re not a dedicated Lankum fan yet.
Side notes: Lord Abore reminds me of a Johnny Flynn arrangement, agus táim ag súil go mór le Radie a chloisteáil ar albam nua KNEECAP go luath!
Lana Del Rey - Did you Know There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd
Beidh deep dive ar Splanc maidie le gairm Lana, mar sin ní dhéarfaidh mé an iomarca, ach ceapaim go bhfuil sí ag dul i bhfeabhas i gcónaí.. mar scríbhneoir… but god she’s always tiptoeing on the verge of problematic isn’t she? The Judah Smith sermon is questionable. I’ll leave it aside until I’ve done more research, ach tá an ceol féin thar cionn. Lana is an archivist. Her music is always drenched in references to old stars, films, current bands, other lyricists, poetry. And now she references herself too, drawing from her own catalogue with snippets of Cinamon Girl and Venice Bitch. The album is a slow burn, like Bannisters and Chemtrails, but not without flare. A&W is like an elevation from Venice Bitch and the whole thing, though miles from her beginnings, could sit comfortably next to Born To Die on any setlist or vinyl shelf. More on Splanc an tseachtain seo chugainn (Dé hAoine 31 Márta!).
There’s also a Lana Extravaganza Club Night in The Well on April 13th!!
GIGS
Someone whose music hasn’t been known for that is contentious live act Ben Howard, atá le filleadh ar Éirinn. Bhí conspóid ann an uair dheireanach ar chas sé anseo, de bharr nár chas sé mórán dá chéad albam Every Kingdom. Ardaíonn sé an cheist: an bhfuil dualgas ar cheoltóirí na classics a chasadh leis an lucht féachana shásamh? Nó an bhfuil dualgas ar éisteoirí meas a bheith acu ar fhorbairt an ealaíontóra? Ticéid ar fáil anseo, if you want to concept addressed in real time.
Tá The Tallest Man on Earth (5’7”) ag filleadh freisin - ticéid anseo. Leithscéal deas filleadh ar an amhrán seo beo ar KEXP má tá treat uait.
Another honourable mention: nílim craiceáilte faoin 1975 ach tá Caroline Polachek ag casadh rompu i bPáirc Naomh Áine an samhradh seo!!!
Meet Me in The (Workman’s) Bathroom
An-lá d’indie kids, agus Meet Me in the Bathroom (clár faisnéise faoin scene le leithéidí Karen O, Interpol agus The Strokes, bunaithe ar leabhar den teideal céanna) sna pictiúrlanna (The Lighthouse agus IFI á léiriú) agus ar líne (ar Showtime) faoi láthair, agus oíche spreatha ag an scannán á reáchtáil ag Nialler9 in Workman’s ar an 7 Aibreán. See you there. Meet me there. Ticéid agus seinnliosta Nialler9 anseo.
Agus ní ceol é seo, ach is breá linn reálta a fheiceáil ag baint úsáid as a n-ardán ar son na maitheasa:
Things we didn’t know we needed:
Love a Like a Version, Love MUNA, Love Celine. Bain sult as.
Cúinne Cultúir
I’m running out of lunchbreak, ach cúpla rud le súil a choinneáil amach dóibh!
Hangmen - Martin McDonagh - ar siúl sa Gaiety faoi láthair agus é thar cionn. Níos fearr mar scéal ná Banshees b’fhéidir?! Ar siúl go dtí an 8 Aibreán.
Thaitin An Lár le Glass Mask go mór liom roimh an Nollaig, mar sin is mé a bhí sásta a fheiceáil go bhfuil dráma de chuid mo charad, Eva O’Connor, á léiriú acu faoi láthair sa Bestseller: Horseplay - gorge venue, guaranteed great drama, and cheesboards!
Agus ar deireadh - Aonach Amárach! Cúpla ticéad fágtha ar Eventbrite don phainéal (le Katie Ní Riain, Múinteoir Meg agus Jeaic MagFhionn) agus margadh amárach, 2pm, D02 VH98), ar son Work Equal. Lón blasta saor in aisce, bí linn!
