Bhuel?
Is this newsletter late because I spent the day trying to wriggle out of work, and wrangle my way into a Springsteen gig for the second time in a week? Maybe.
Will it be worth the wait? I think so!
Read on for big reveal agus comórtas le ticéid a bhuachaint d’Fhéile Nasc!
Last month I hinted (not very mysteriously) that there was something new coming to the newsletter, and so I am thrilled to introduce Big Fan podcast! It’s for fans, about fans, featuring fans - of music, bands, and icons. In keeping with the newsletter, the production may be a little sporadic and unpolished, but it will be personal and nostalgic, and I adore the guests I have lined up so far.
From the get-go, I knew who I wanted as my first guest: my uncle, Benny Carroll - a lifelong Bruce Springsteen and music fan. As you probably know, Springsteen is in town for three huge RDS shows. And when Bruce is in town, so is Benny. Mar sin, thapaigh mé an deis, and we sat down ahead of the final Dublin show for a chat about his experiences over the years - from the moment he first heard Jungleland; to the ‘Tramps’, an international community of Bruce fans who have followed his tours over the years; to introducing his grandchildren to The Boss. Benny may have saved some of the ..juicier.. stories collected over the years for the pub later on in the evening, but I really enjoyed this conversation, and I hope you will too!
You can listen here and find links to Spotify, Apple, Google, Tune In, and wherever else you get your podcasts in the next 24 hours.
Mé fhéin agus Benny aréir, Bruce san RDS, agus an scairf Slane 1985 a luadh le linn ár gcomhrá
I honestly won’t mind if nobody listens to this because I just loved recording it, but Benny is expecting his contribution to attract the masses, so if you enjoy the episode, please do subscribe on Spotify or here on Substack to hear future episodes. It’s very much appreciated.
This episode is in English, and the series will be a mixture of interviews as Béarla agus as Gaeilge.
Bruce Springsteen, RDS, Dé hAoine 5 Meitheamh 2023
Má bhí tú ag an ngig thar an deireadh seachtaine, nó mura raibh, tá an seinnliosta (a bheag nó a mhór) ar fáil anseo:
Agus luaigh Benny an rapálaí Ren le linn ár gcainte freisin - seo traic dá chuid:
Ag filleadh ar ghnáthchúrsaí nuachtlitreach, tá cuma álainn ar Songs from a Safe Harbour i mbliana, le ceol le Feist, Bonny Light Horsemen, Wilco, Ye Vagabonds agus neart eile. Cillian Murphy agus Edna O’ Brien agus na deartháireacha Dessner (The National) atá á stiúradh i mbliana, agus tá cuma speisialta ar an rud atá cruthaithe i gCorcaigh le blianta beaga anuas. Beidh an fhéile á reáchtail ón 7-10 Meán Fómhair 2023, agus beidh ticéid ar díol ón 12 Bealtaine - tuilleadh eolais ar an suíomh: soundsfromasafeharbour.com
Bhí The Boss mar ábhar comhrá ar Splanc na seachtaine seo ar Newstalk- agus chuir Cuán fáilte roimh Grá Pizza (best pizza in Ireland) agus Louisa Ní Éidean (le labhairt faoin Met Gala) ar an aer freisin! 🍕
And finally mar fhocal scoir, FÉILE NASC is returning this month, maraon le Féile Nasc: MAYHEM and I have two pairs of tickets (a set for Saturday and a set for Sunday) to give away before the 19th of May!
Saturday the 20th of May will be Mayhem by name and nature with Kneecap (!!!), The Bonny Men, Róisín Ó and Ispíní na hÉireann, while Sunday will be family (and hangover) friendly, with tunes from Rónán Ó Snodaigh & Myles O’Reilly (stunning), Dave Munnelly and Shane McGowan(!!!!). One of my highlights of 2022 was swaying to Paul Brady in the sunset with my friends, cider in hand, after a day spent listening to trad in the sun. Bliss. Also last year’s festival was 99% plastic free, so that’s cute.
To enter, all you have to do is give this post a ❤️ on Substack, and subscribe if you haven’t already - if you have a preference for Saturday or Sunday tickets, let me know in the comments. Tickets cost €33 - €53.50 and are available at nasc.ie.
Gafa le do vaidhb a chailín! Ba bhreá liom dul chuig an féile ar an satharn don Mayhem ☀️
Dia duit! Míle buíochas as an comórtas a dhéanamh, Ba chóir go mbeadh an féile iontach! Ní féidir liom a chreidiúint go mbeidh Knee-cap ag dul, Ba bhreá liom dul ar an Satharn x
